Show Him the Money: A Vocational Independence Program Alumni Success Story
You don’t have to meet Barry Mezey to know that he’s a self-confident, self-made, energetic young entrepreneur. He tells you so on his company’s Web site, and he reminds you in his e-mails. And when you do speak with him, he tells you again. Barry is president of Superstar Management Group, Inc., a Miami, Fla.-based marketing consulting company founded in 2007, that represents professional athletes, celebrities, and corporations, and sponsors championship tours. Barry lets you know exactly why he’s up and coming star in the celebrity-marketing industry, pointing out that he always knew he was meant for greatness, as he rapidly rattles off a roster of current and former clients of whom he’s quite proud. Only in his late twenties, Barry’s accomplishments are indeed quite impressive, but not exactly extraordinary. That is, however, until you realize that Barry is learning disabled and that his journey to his current success began as a student at New York Institute of Technology’s (NYIT) Vocational Independence Program (VIP) in Central Islip, N.Y.
VIP is a 3-year post-secondary, college-based educational and vocational program for students who have significant learning disabilities, including those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. The program focuses on academics, independent living, social skills, and vocational exploration training to enhance students’ chances of a successful transition to adulthood. Students who attend VIP have a variety of learning disorders, and their intellectual abilities range from very high to very low-functioning, with most falling somewhere in the middle. There are two tracks in the program: Track 1 is for the lower-functioning students, and is geared toward vocational training, social skills and independent living; Track 2 is for the more academically inclined students, and includes everything that Track 1 provides, but in addition, students can take credit-bearing courses at NYIT’s Old Westbury (N.Y.) campus. Barry was a Track 2 student, and earned about 9 college credits at NYIT towards a degree, received his college diploma in (Business Office Management - Public Relations), an unofficial honorary BBA from the NYIT athletics department and despite growing up as a special needs child with a severe learning disability in math and science, tourettes syndrome, aspergers autism, and bi-polar disorder (Superstar Management Group, Inc. Web site).
I first learned about Barry while compiling the Alumni Notes section for the fall 2009 issue of NYIT Magazine. An e-mail he sent to the VIP administration and to NYIT Alumni Relations—in which he provided an update of his career—was forwarded to my attention. The message ended with “Thanks for all of your continued support of me and you all know how much you all mean to me at NYIT as without the VIP and NYIT staff, I would not be where I am today.” As the Alumni Notes writer, from that e-mail I wrote the following posting for the magazine:
Show him the money! Sports Marketing Agent Barry Mezey (’03), a graduate of NYIT’s Vocational Independence Program (VIP), received his certification in sports management from the University of Miami in 2006 and is now president of Superstar Management Group Inc. in Miami, Fla. Over the past three years, he has represented several sports stars and credits his success to his results-oriented work ethic and the constant personal attention he affords to his athletes. Barry uses his own personal struggles to help athletes become the best they can be.
Naturally, when I decided to do a feature story on the VIP, I thought Barry would be the perfect side-bar to accompany it. What better way to espouse the virtues of the program than to spotlight the success story of one of its alumni? However, it was quite surprising to discover that my side-bar story would take a different direction after interviewing Barry over the phone on the evening of November 16, 2009. It started out in a positive tone toward the VIP—for about 30 seconds, that is:
“My whole education at VIP was customized to my abilities—that’s the only thing I liked about the program. They let me keep my internships that I was really good at, which was working with the baseball team through the athletics department, and in a geriatric center learning public relations.”
But Barry quickly followed by saying:
“But half the stuff they have students doing, they talked down to us, they put me in jobs that were way beneath me—you know they had me sealing envelopes and stuffing letters—that wasn’t for me. I was meant to do greater things. Which is why all those people (administration) that were there when I was there are gone.”
“They have track 1 students working in Wal-Mart as a greeter, is that something that sounds real enticing to you? To have someone enroll into a college program working in Wal-Mart as a greeter when they could do so much more with their lives?”
But, here Barry is mistaken. VIP is not a traditional college program—it’s a post-secondary, college-based transitional program. Today, the VIP strives to match students’ skills and abilities with the appropriate level job, and for some students, being a greeter at Wal-Mart is a good fit and a proud position for them to hold.
Throughout our approximate forty-minute conversation, Barry vacillated between listing all of the VIP’s faults, to praising the experience for the valuable skills and competencies it taught him.
“I don’t know why I wasted my time so much at VIP when I was meant to do so much more, but at VIP I was able to learn certain things—how to treat people better. I was able to fit in. I always wanted to fit in, but I didn’t really fit in when I was younger. So when I got to VIP, I met a lot people, and I felt like I fit in. The first year was great, the second year was horrible, and the third year was a lot of fun because I met my best friend.”
Whatever his conflicting feelings about the VIP, Barry loved NYIT at Old Westbury.
“One of the nice things about NYIT (OW campus) is that a lot of people cared for me. I got involved with the baseball program in 2001 through 2003. I learned a lot working in the athletics department. I learned a lot about operations, sponsorship opportunities, media.”
When I asked him if the VIP encouraged him to go on to attend the University of Miami, Barry responded “absolutely.” Although his intention was to pursue a four-year degree there, he wasn’t able to take on a full course load, and the cost of his education was becoming a burden on his family. He decided instead to complete the certification program in sports management (33 credits), and “then get to work.” But before looking for a job, Barry also went on to receive certification in athlete management from Sports Management Worldwide. However, despite his two certifications, Barry could not find a job in the industry.
“I never got my degree so none of the major agencies in sports entertainment would hire me…because I didn’t have a bachelor’s degree, I didn’t qualify for agent training programs, despite me having a certification in athlete management and sports management from the University of Miami. Now, I’m competing with all these companies and taking away their clients left and right. Because they wouldn’t hire me, I went on a mission to be the best.”
Barry founded Superstar Management Group, Inc. in 2007, and quickly started receiving exposure one client at a time. The company’s Web site describes itself this way:
“Superstar Management Group, Inc. has built a reputation as one of the leading sports, corporate, event and entertainment marketing, media and public relations firms worldwide. Barry has spent the last 3 years since SMG's inception building key relationships with top industry professionals and arranging many top tier and lucrative sponsorship, endorsement, and licensing deals…. Barry has been called the real ‘Jerry Maguire’ of the sports, corporate and celebrity marketing, media and public relations business by providing constant personal attention around the clock to all SMG Clients, not just our top clients.”
As our conversation was winding down, Barry concluded that VIP could be a really good program if it followed a couple of his suggestions, which he plans on offering to the administration:
1. VIP students should be integrated with the general NYIT student populations at both the Old Westbury and Manhattan campuses; and
2. Both the Old Westbury and Manhattan campuses should offer various technical and vocational associate degree programs that would permit students to get licensed or certified in a specific vocation after graduating.
Despite Barry’s recollections and opinions about NYIT’s Vocational Independence Program, as a learning disabled individual, his is truly a success story no matter where he chooses to lay the credit. He epitomizes the very mission of the program to “maximize the potential of individuals with learning differences by teaching skills and strategies, and providing support necessary for successful and independent lives” (VIP Web site).
In addition to his career as a marketing agent, Barry is a motivational speaker at schools for disabled children, youth centers, and hospitals, and he works with a variety of charities. Also, since the tragedy of 9/11, Barry has been passionate about community service. Today, he’s a volunteer crime prevention officer/ civilian special agent with the US Border Patrol Auxiliary.
